AD Kids Inc - Henrichs Susan

12th November 2008, 11:13
News with Susan Henrichs There's no escaping it. At some point, if you're a mom to a toddler, you must face the inevitable temper tantrum in the supermarket, in the restaurant or wherever you'd least like it to happen. So rather than dreading the unavoidable, why not arm yourself with a plan for the next time your little darling turns into a little demon?

Curious Behavior
"Toddlers are never little angels in public," says Ann Douglas, 38-year-old mother of four and author of The Mother of All Baby Books John Wiley & Sons, 2002)and soon-to-come The Mother of All Toddler Books. In fact, when her son was 2, he pulled the plug on the entire cash register system while they were shopping at a local liquor store. "He was magnetically drawn to plugs and outlets," says Douglas.

"This is natural behavior for toddlers," says Robert Billingham, associate professor of human development and family studies at Indiana University. "Everything is so new, exciting, interesting and stimulating. They're simply responding in a curious sort of way."
AD Kids Inc. Memory For A Good Game of Peek-a-Boo!
The game 'Peek-a-Boo' wouldn't be possible without this idea of object permanence! A baby laughs and squeals when Daddy's face reappears from behind his hands, because she's beginning to realize that he's still there, even when he's out of sight. Babies who've mastered 'Peek-a-Boo' have probably caught on to the idea of object permanence.

David Lurino: Using Time-Outs
Kids between the ages of 24 to 36 months are also ready for you to try using time-outs. Time-out works like this: When your child misbehaves, for every year of his age, he gets one minute to sit quietly in a chair or in his room to calm himself down (for example, a 3-year-old gets three minutes). He gets up when you say time-out is over.

Of course, every child is different, and no one discipline method will work all the time. But the more practice you get doling it out and the more your child understands boundaries, the happier everyone will be.

Gains Through Games
And when you're having fun, you'll see great results from your efforts, say the experts. Morey says that moms who consistently come to her class ? where games are an integral part of the curriculum ? find their children hitting major milestones much earlier. In the last year, she's had two babies start walking at only 10 months.

Playing educational games with your baby helps him develop a wide range of skills that he'll need to function in the world. "Play affects all aspects of development from motor skills to cognitive and social abilities," says Gwyneth Doherty-Sneddon, a developmental psychologist at the University of Stirling in Scotland. "These skills include hand-eye coordination, fine muscle movements and learning to take turns with another person. Through play, babies practice their skills, continually developing them as they do."

David Lurino: When to be concerned
Babies develop skills differently, some more quickly than others, but if your child hasn't started scribbling by the time he's about 15 or 16 months old, bring it up the next time you see his pediatrician. Keep in mind that premature babies may reach this and other milestones later than their peers.

AD Kids Inc. Information
Prevent fires
According to the National Safe Kids Campaign, an injury-prevention program of Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., in 1997 approximately 225 children age 4 and under died from fires and burns suffered at home.

Install smoke detectors in every bedroom and one near the kitchen. Check them monthly to be sure they're working, and change the batteries annually. "A working smoke detector cuts the chances of dying in a fire in half," says Heather Paul, executive director of the NSKC. If you have a fireplace, keep a fire extinguisher nearby, and have it serviced or checked according to the manufacturer's instructions. Start talking to your child about the dangers of fire and your fire escape route at an early age.

Do you hate the feel of flame-retardant sleepwear? Softer, non-flame-retardant garments can be okay under certain conditions.
About Susan Henrichs A whiny child, however, isn't deliberately annoying or spoiled. Whining is often the only way that young kids can express themselves when they're tired, cranky, hungry, uncomfortable, or just don't want to do something. Although three- and four-year-olds' language skills are rapidly improving, they still don't have the vocabulary to describe all of these feelings, explains Dr. Michele Borba, EdD, author of Parents Do Make a Difference.

Even when your child is able to articulate that she is hungry for lunch or hates sitting in her car seat, for example, she may still whine because she's learned from experience that you'll pay attention. "For three- and four-year-olds who are testing the limits of their independence, whining makes them feel very powerful," says psychologist Dr. Carolyn Crowder, PhD, coauthor of Whining: 3 Steps to Stopping It Before the Tears and Tantrums Start.

"If you can't stand whining, your child will do it even more, simply because it gets a reaction," agrees Dr. Jane Nelsen, EdD, coauthor of Positive Discipline for Preschoolers. Even scolding your child can reinforce the behavior. "Kids just want a response. When they don't know how to get a positive response, they'll go for a negative one," Dr. Nelsen explains. And needless to say, giving in ("OK, you can have one piece of candy, but promise you'll eat your lunch?") doesn't work either. You'll get a respite from the whining, but you're still perpetuating the problem.

AD Kids Inc. Impatient Diners
Sometimes a baby who has just learned to walk hates to sit still for mealtimes. So respect this desire to be on the move and don't keep an active baby confined in the high chair for periods of more than 10 minutes or so.
